Biography
Violinist Miclen LaiPang has swiftly established himself as one of the most compelling and versatile artists of his generation, earning international recognition as a soloist, chamber musician, concertmaster, educator, and curator. Praised by The New York Times as “a force to be reckoned with” and described by Die Welt as “a musician of daring virtuosity with gripping access and noble elegance,” he has appeared with leading orchestras and performed in prestigious halls such as Carnegie Hall, the Vienna Musikverein, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Hamburg Elbphilharmonie, Wigmore Hall, Royal Albert Hall, Berlin Philharmonie, Salzburg Dom, Luxembourg Philharmonie, Victoria Concert Hall Singapore, and St. Martin-in-the-Fields.
Born in California and inspired early on by his brother—a violinist in the Malaysian Philharmonic—Miclen began violin lessons at age three. He quickly rose to international attention through numerous competition wins and television appearances, later building a career that has brought him to over 60 countries worldwide. His accolades include major prizes from the Schoenfeld International String Competition, Stradivarius International Violin Competition, and Grand Prizes from the American Fine Arts National Competition, Vancouver International Music Competition, and others.
As a soloist and recording artist, Miclen’s performances have been broadcast on NBC, ESPN, 3ABN, LLBN, and the Hope Channel. His recordings include projects with Sony RCA Red Seal and Naxos. His recent Naxos release—Beethoven’s Kreutzer Sonata arranged for violin and strings—topped the Apple Music Classical charts in over 40 countries. He recently signed with Delos and has just completed recording a new solo album, set for release in early 2026.
A passionate chamber musician and leader, Miclen has participated in leading festivals such as Verbier, IMS Prussia Cove, Moab, Tanglewood, Salzburg, Rheingau, Lyricafest, iPalpiti, and Ghent, and has worked with renowned artists including Ivry Gitlis (†), Janos Starker (†), Lawrence Dutton, Jens Peter Maintz, Christoph Richter, Gerhard Schulz, Robert McDuffie, Irvine Arditti, and Peter Serkin (†). His artistry has been shaped by the guidance of esteemed mentors, including Charles Castleman, Ruggiero Ricci (†), Aaron Rosand (†), Alice Schoenfeld (†), Ida Bieler, Boris Kuschnir, and Linda Rose. He is the violinist of the internationally celebrated Trio Zadig, currently based in Paris with cellist Marc Girard Garcia and pianist Guillaume Vincent. The trio is an Associate Artist at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel and a resident ensemble of both the Fondation Singer-Polignac and the Académie Musicale de Villecroze.
Miclen is equally devoted to education and outreach. He is a faculty member at the International Chamber Music Academy of Southern Germany in Ochsenhausen and regularly gives masterclasses worldwide. He has also taught at the Castleman Quartet Program and the Talent Summer Music Courses in Brescia, Italy. A committed advocate for community-based music programs, he has contributed to El Sistema-inspired initiatives in the United States and founded the Southeast Asia Music Festival in the Philippines, promoting high-level musical education in underrepresented regions.
He currently resides in Paris and maintains an active international schedule across Europe, North America, Asia, and Africa. In addition to performing, Miclen is widely recognized for his visionary curatorial work. He is the Founder and Artistic Director of M Sphère, a Paris-based chamber music collective known for immersive, boundary-pushing performances, and he directs the Miesbach Kammermusikfestival in Germany, where his innovative programming often explores themes of reflection and intensity. He also serves as Co-Artistic Director of Zadig & Friends and the Festival of International Artists at Hughes Hall, University of Cambridge. Most recently, he has begun forming a new chamber music festival in the Balearic Islands, dedicated to connecting international artists with the region’s vibrant cultural and natural landscape through community-centered musical collaborations.
He performs on the 1707 Antonio Stradivari ‘Charles Castleman, ex-Marquis de Champeaux’, generously loaned by the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, and the c.1850 Dominique Peccatte bow known as the ‘ex-Eugène Ysaÿe’.
